This third course in the Word-Fine series: In this third course in the Writing and Editing series, you'll learn several strategies to help you tackle what's often the most daunting, even paralyzing, part of the writing process: getting started. You'll learn about the "planning fallacy" and "combining temptations." You'll have the opportunity to experiment with "free writing" and "writing before you're ready." And you'll continue to benefit from models and advice from a variety of writers using our regular "Good Sentences" and "Conclusions" segments. As with the other three courses in this series, you'll also have access to a wide range of books and other resources that you can use after you complete the course. These include: (1) readings and exercises provided to students who have taken the in-person version of this course at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago; (2) two online libraries of excellent writing from a variety of journalists, scholars, novelists, poets, historians, and entrepreneurs; and (3) a monthly newsletter, "Good Suggestions."

Resilient teaching is the ability to facilitate learning processes that adapt to changing conditions and disruptions. This teaching ability can be seen as the result of a design approach that pays attention to the relationship between learning goals and activities and the environments in which they are located. Resilient approaches to learning recognize that dynamic learning contexts may require new forms of interaction between teachers, students, content, and tools. They also require the ability to rethink the design of learning experiences based on a nuanced understanding of the context. The course is aimed at higher education teachers, lecturers and postgraduate students, but can be applied to educators working in a wide range of learning environments. The course is designed for learners who may need to rethink their teaching practices in the near future due to the constantly changing circumstances of the current COVID-19 pandemic. Although the course is driven by the current crisis, we expect it to remain relevant to educators who are experiencing disruption and change to their teaching for a variety of reasons and need to quickly adapt their courses. To support learning and reflection, we are introducing a new journaling tool to the course, which gives participants the opportunity to reflect on their own experiences. To support the development of a community, participants can share their journal entries with other course participants in an interactive gallery.

This fourth and final course in the Word Mastery: Writing and Editing Series will help you master what is perhaps the most important step in the writing process: editing. You’ll learn the difference between editing and proofreading. You’ll practice “number dropping” so that the data and statistics you use are clear and compelling. And you’ll learn a system for giving and receiving feedback that will help you systematize what to cut and what to keep in each draft. As with the other three courses in this series, you’ll also have access to a wide range of books and other resources that you can use after you complete the course. These include: (1) readings and exercises that were provided to students who took the in-person versions of this course at the University of Michigan and the University of Chicago; (2) two online libraries of excellent writing from a variety of journalists, scholars, novelists, poets, historians, and entrepreneurs; and (3) a monthly newsletter called “Good Suggestions.”

This course has been designed to help leaders like you learn how to effectively manage the challenges that arise from significant organisational disruption. As a participant in this course, you will learn why understanding the perspectives of different stakeholders can empower a leader and significantly improve their response to events that threaten the very survival of the organisation. This course also focuses on understanding and developing individual and organisational resilience – the ability to anticipate potential threats, cope effectively with adverse events when they occur, and adapt to changing conditions, ensuring a viable path forward for yourself, your team and your organisation. These topics are particularly relevant in the wake of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Many of the course examples will reference the lessons that leaders around the world have learned from this far-reaching health crisis. Over the course of eight modules of the course, spread over four weeks, participants will explore topics such as: Why crises are becoming increasingly common in a VUCA world; Characteristics of resilient organisations and how to build resilience; Stakeholder value propositions and how they are threatened in a crisis; an organizational framework for assessing the types of crises an organization might face; the unique and complex nature of crisis environments; the foundations of crisis leadership; and building a plan to prepare yourself, your team, and your organization for the next major crisis, which in today's world is not so much an "if" as a "when." Professor Mike Barger, the instructor for this course, served as a TOPGUN instructor in the U.S. Navy and was the founder and CEO of JetBlue Airways. His professional experiences have given him a wealth of insight into crisis leadership and a true understanding of what it means to be resilient. Throughout the course, Professor Barger will use numerous practical examples that will make the content in this course easy to digest, understand, and translate into practical lessons that you can immediately apply to your organization. Crisis leadership is a topic that is exciting, daunting, and nearly impossible to master. However, with a little time and effort over the course of four weeks, you will be able to develop an exceptional set of crisis leadership tools that will serve you throughout your professional career.

In this course, you will learn the basic structure of a web application and how a web browser communicates with a web server. You will be introduced to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) request/response cycle, including GET/POST/Redirect. You will also gain an introduction to Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), as well as the overall structure of a Django application. We will examine the Model-View-Controller (MVC) pattern for web applications and how it relates to Django. You will learn how to deploy a Django application using a service such as PythonAnywhere so that it is accessible over the web. This is the first course in the Django for Everyone specialization. It is recommended that you complete the Python for Everyone specialization or equivalent learning experience before beginning this series.

In this course, you will learn how Django interacts with the database through model objects. You will learn Object-Relational Mapping (ORM) for database access and how Django models implement this pattern. We will look at the Object-Oriented (OO) pattern in Python. You will learn the basics of Structured Query Language (SQL) and database modeling, including one-to-many and many-to-many relationships and how they work in SQL and Django models. You will learn how to use the Django console and scripts to work interactively with your application objects.

In this course, you will learn how to build Django-based web applications that are usable by end users. You will learn about cookies, sessions, and authentication processes in Django. You will build navigation into your applications and learn ways to easily enhance the look and feel of your Django applications. You will begin building a simple application to power a classifieds site, which will help you understand many of the problems and techniques you encounter when developing websites. You will also learn how to move an application from development to production.

In this course, you will learn how social workers in the United States are engaged in creating change and supporting the resilience of individuals, families, and communities in a new era. Students will have the opportunity to explore the social work profession, the various roles of social workers in different settings, the cross-cutting themes that guide social work, the history of social work, and contemporary issues. Using a social justice lens, students will reflect on current issues that impact the lives of individuals, families, and communities and explore ways to advocate for needed change. This course can be taken as a stand-alone learning experience or as part of the Social Work: Practice, Policy, and Research program.

Do you have an idea that could help solve a societal problem? Are you wondering if starting a social enterprise is the best way forward? Are you considering becoming a social entrepreneur? In this course, you will critically analyze what makes a good idea and whether that idea requires starting a new business. You will create a personal immersion plan, considering different ways to create an impact. You will explore personal challenges and the connection to your life’s purpose before making the decision to become a social entrepreneur. Each week, you will see and hear from 11 real social entrepreneurs working around the world, sharing the lessons they have learned, the mistakes they have made, and how you can overcome them. Among their experiences: providing clean water in India and the Dominican Republic, keeping premature babies warm without incubators, improving education in Africa and Detroit, and bringing affordable fresh food to low-income communities in Los Angeles. Ultimately, you will be able to decide if your idea is needed in the world and if starting a social enterprise is the right path for you. This course is based on the book "Becoming a Social Entrepreneur: Starting, Scaling, and Staying True" by Michael Gordon.

This course takes a cross-disciplinary look at how we can make every day the best day of our lives by exploring the question, “How can you be your brightest, most passionate self?” Join us on this journey with our animated host Lewis! You’ll envision your “perfect day” and then slowly break down the elements of that day to better understand key elements such as finding your purpose, defining success, mental and physical health, the importance of community, and overcoming risk and adversity. You’ll also hear from a wide range of people, including students, doctors, teachers, professional storytellers, professional athletes, coaches, and more, who will share stories about their own journeys, communities, and sources of inspiration. This is an introductory course on the social determinants of population health with a focus on the United States. This course will introduce or strengthen your knowledge of health-related issues that examine the behavioral, psychological, and structural factors in population health beyond the health care system. We will examine the social, economic, and political factors that contribute to health inequities and propose innovative ways to reduce health inequities when the goal is to achieve health equity. This course will increase your awareness, knowledge, and understanding of issues related to the behavioral, psychological, and structural factors that contribute to understanding population health and health inequities. We will discuss conceptual and methodological issues of key importance to health professionals working to achieve health equity in order to reduce health inequities at multiple levels of influence. Opportunities will be provided to practice skills in cultural humility, conducting contentious dialogues, and professional self-assessment. By the end of the course, you will be able to: Discuss the ways in which structural bias, social inequity, and racism undermine health and create challenges to achieving health equity at the organizational, community, and societal levels
