About Understanding research methods course
This MOOC aims to demystify research and research methods. It will set out the basics of conducting research, aimed primarily, but not exclusively, at postgraduate students. Our focus is on working with students, who will be engaged in active and challenging discussions and exercises, befitting the research-intensive status of SOAS, the University of London, and its rich research heritage. The course will be of interest to those of you who require an understanding of research approaches and skills and, importantly, the ability to apply these in your studies or professional work. In particular, this course will help those of you who are required to undertake research as part of your postgraduate studies but may not have access to research methods courses, or those of you who feel you would like additional support to improve yourself. No prior knowledge or experience of research is required to take this course, so it is suitable for everyone.
This MOOC draws on a wealth of existing course material designed to support research learning at SOAS, University of London, and in particular from the Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy (CISD). In 2015, the course was nominated for the university’s prestigious Guardian Award for its innovative approach to online learning. Participation in or completion of this online course does not provide credit towards any University of London degree.
