Design of first order optical systems

This course can also be taken for credit as ECEA 5600, part of CU Boulder’s Electrical Engineering Master of Science program. Optical devices are how we see the world, from corrective eyeglasses to medical endoscopes, cell phone cameras, and orbital telescopes. When you complete this course, you will be able to design such optical systems to first order using simple mathematical and graphical techniques. This first-order design will allow you to develop the foundation needed to begin any optical design, as well as the intuition needed to quickly decide the feasibility of complex designs during brainstorming sessions. You will learn how to input these designs into the industry-standard design tool, OpticStudio from Zemax, to analyze and improve performance using powerful automated optimization techniques.
